Welcome to the captivating world of the ‘Who I Am’ Trilogy, a tapestry woven with beauty and depth that began over fifteen years ago. Step into the lives of twin sister’s Savannah and Elisha, two characters whose voices beckoned me to tell their story of hurt, betrayal, and redemption. Like profound visitors entering my home, they demanded to be heard, each in their own unique way.
As I embarked on this writing journey, it was decidedly different from any other story I had previously written. Their voices, and the voices of all the other characters that showed up, echoed in my mind, guiding my pen to translate their experiences onto paper. Their authenticity was paramount; if I didn’t capture their essence, they would object and rewrite their own narratives through me, a dynamic and challenging experience. It was a dance of collaboration, as I surrendered to the story and allowed it to unfold. I would laugh and cry with them. Cuss them and warn them about their thoughts or actions. I would scream out, “No you didn’t!” or laugh so hard my belly ached.
With every turn of the page, new characters emerged, each mesmerizing in their presence. Their stories, whether messy or inspiring, served a greater purpose within the grand scheme. Heartbreak, trauma, acts of violence, and abuse intertwined with themes of hope, dreams, and the pursuit of fulfillment. Betrayal, mental health struggles, grief, thoughts of revenge and suicide, and profound spiritual questions about the nature of God, spirituality, and love were explored. These characters, like many of us, yearned for a life filled with happiness and purpose.
Around eight years ago, as I grappled with condensing the story into one book, my beloved husband, my first reader and editor, uttered the profound words, “This is not one magnificent book, but three.” That realization gave me the freedom to delve deeper, allowing the story to breathe and expand. If you wonder why it took me so long to write and publish it, I can tell you, that just like the characters, I have gone through a transformation of my own. I had to get past my own issues; fear, doubt, rejection, imposter syndrome, and the unrelenting voice of the critic in my head.
